………
So,in relation to GPs, here is a breakdown of salary, work schedule, insurance and contracts.
➡️ Hours
In Ireland, GPs work in ‘sessions’. A session is roughly a 4-hour time slot, during which a GP will see patients and do administrative work.
GPs spend approximately 15 minutes per patient, so they are expected to see approximately 16 patients per session.
GPs can do either two sessions per day (Morning and Afternoon) or just one.
How many sessions a GP does per week is discussed between the GP and Practice Manager. We have placed GPs that agreed to work only 4 sessions (2 days a week) and others that have agreed to work 10 sessions (5 days per week).
🔴 Salary
GPs are paid per session. How much they are paid is dependent on location of the practice and level of experience the GP possesses.
➡️ GPs working in rural areas are expected to earn approximately €290 - €310 per session.
➡️ GPs working in the main cities, such as Dublin, Cork or Galway can expect to earn more, approximately €320 - €350 per session.
As an example, an experienced GP in Dublin working 8 sessions per week at €330 per session will earn approx. €137,280 per annum. At this income, the GP will be subject to 40% income tax, so after tax, they earn netto €75,000 per annum.
➡️ Insurance
In order for a doctor in Ireland to work as a GP, they first need have GP indemnity insurance.
❗️To qualify for GP insurance, the doctor must have;
at least
36 months of clinical medical experience,
evidence of qualification,
IMC Registration,
Scope of Practice (types of medical services provided, full-time/part-time, number of patients and typical clinical workload.),
claims history,
Garda Vetting (Criminal background check).
Annual premiums for indemnity insurance costs approx. €6,000 - €10,000.
Many Practices offer to cover the GP’s indemnity insurance. There are many insurance providers, the largest being MPS, MDU and the IMO Group Scheme.
➡️ Contracts
The most common contract arrangement is a ‘permanent full-time contract’. GPs can also opt for ‘Out-Of-Hours’ work, where they will essentially be on-call outside of office hours
.
➡️ Some practices also offer home-visitation services.
The majority of the practices we & our Partner are in discussions with are based in rural areas(outside the large cities). The most common workload being offered is 6 – 8 sessions per week. Salaries are usually in the range of €290 - €310 per session. Indemnity insurance is usually covered by the practice.
